The Inquisition
The fearless Mike Rimmer sat Vlada down and fired a load of questions at him! He showed no mercy…
What was the first album and single you bought, where did you buy them?
The first album I bought was from German pop star Nena. It was in 1983 and I bought the album in a department store in my home town, Aarau, in Switzerland. The first single was Depeche Mode’s “Everything Counts” in 1983.
What was the last book you finished reading and what did you think of it?
It was John Ortberg’s “If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get out of the Boat” which was an excellent, but also quite challenging read. Ortberg encourages the reader with wisdom, depth, great stories and humour to shake off fear, step out of the infamous boat and experience the adventure of a lifetime. The story of Jesus calling Peter out of the boat has intrigued me for quite a while now.
How long does it take you to style your hair in the morning and what do you use to make it stick up?
It takes about 5 minutes max and I am not sure whether I should reveal the secret of my funky hairstyle... But, since it’s you: I use a product called KMS Hairplay Molding Paste. There you go, it’s out now!
Which song do you wish you'd written?
“Amazing Grace”: That song touches my heart whenever I hear it or sing it. The simplicity and depth of it is beautiful. And I’m confident that this was the first song I played on a keyboard when I was about 5 or 6.
If they made a movie of your life, who would play you?
Brad Pitt, of course! Or perhaps it should be Rowan Atkinson.
What's your favourite article of clothing in your wardrobe?
A beige classic winter coat that I got in Belgrade many years ago. My mom had later “enhanced” it with new exquisite lining. It’s quite worn out now, but I still love that coat.
Did your mother ever make you wear lederhosen when you were younger?
No, she didn’t. Mind you, I’m of Serbian, not Bavarian descent...
Can you yodel?
Not really. Even though my dad used to say that I sounded like a rooster when I sang as a teenager. Does that count?
Who are your singing heroes?
Nat King Cole
Stevie Wonder
Mark Kibble (Take 6)
Bobby McFerrin
Ella Fitzgerald
Which superhero power would be really useful to you right now?
The power to do things at superspeed. I could be efficient and get things done in a fraction of the time that it would usually take. Why? There‘s so much on my plate right now that I wish I could get things done in no time!
What's your favourite verse from the Bible
Romans 8:28
What was the first car you ever owned?
A red 1994 Toyota Corolla 1.6. Super reliable!
What do you do to warm up your voice before you go on stage?
Warm up? What do you mean? Just kidding. I sing a certain short set of exercises that I do on a show or recordings day. But I usually do the exercises in the morning, and then maybe once more in the afternoon. After soundcheck the voice is warm enough so that I don’t do any exercises right before going on stage. You don’t work out in the gym for two hours before playing a 90 minute football game, do you?
Where is your favourite place in the world?
The Swiss Alps, especially the so-called “Berner Oberland”. The grandeur and majesty of the Alps are simply breathtaking!
Do you consider yourself more Swiss than Serbian or vice versa?
It’s virtually impossible for me to answer that question! In an intriguing way, I am both, as I was born and raised in Switzerland, but of Serbian parents. But what I realize is that, depending on the situation, I can be more “Swiss” or “Serbian” :)
In your dreams, who would you like to sing a duet with on the next album?
Either Stevie Wonder or Whitney Houston
Which musical instruments can you play?
I play the piano, the human voice, the (synth) bass, the (synth) drums and errr… the (synth) horns
What's your favourite food?
Swiss (raclette!), Serbian (gibanica, ajvar, prebranac!), Mexican (fajitas!), Italian (pasta al pesto!), Chinese, Indian... you name it. I just love food!
Which two celebrities would you like to be stuck in a lift with?
Bono or Michael Jackson
If you had a time machine, where in the 20th century would you like to travel?
The 1950s. That time period has fascinated me since I was a boy.
